Lot #319: Vintage pre-war Hercules bicycle
This week, we have two vintage, pre-war bicycles up for sale that will be of interest to many people. The first, is a Hercules Cycles example with an unusual frame. Hercules began making bicycles and motorbikes in 1910 before going out of business in 2003.
The other, with an X frame, was made by Raleigh Bicycle Company. The company was founded in 1888 and continues to manufacture bicycles to this day.

Lot #287: Three-high Globe-Wernicke sectional stacking bookcase
We occasionally have vintage Globe-Wernicke ‘Elastic’ bookcases come up for sale at our auctions – like this one we have entered this week.
Globe-Wernicke was founded in 1899 in Cincinnati, Ohio. One of the founders of the company, Otto Wernicke, had previously patented the ‘Elastic bookcase’ in 1892 – the forerunner to all those modular shelving systems we know today. Today, they’re also commonly known as ‘barrister bookcases’. They were so successful that they soon expanded their manufacturing internationally to Canada, France, Germany and here in the UK. They opened retail outlets in London and Manchester.
Globe-Wernicke modules are now hugely popular items of furniture; they’re in great demand for storing books but also for displaying collections such as vintage pottery & glass, antique toys and fossils & taxidermy.

Unusual highlights from Friday’s sale include an album of Lily White sample photographs and boxes of glass plate negatives, a set of antique cast iron stair balustrades, a Medieval knight and maiden printing block and an antique stone finial taking the form of a pineapple.

Lot #261: Framed Halifax mayor picture/photograph – Arthur Pickles OBE JP
In this week’s sale, we have this very striking portrait of Arthur Pickles OBE JP. He was an architect and property developer by trade, Liberal Party politician and, in 1951, became Mayor of Halifax.
He was a member of a nationally famous, local family. He was the elder brother of actor and broadcaster, Wilfred Pickles. His son was, James Pickles, circuit judge, barrister and newspaper columnist. His daughter, Christina Pickles played Ross’ mother in the long-running sitcom, Friends. His granddaughter, Carolyn Pickles, is also an actress who has appeared in The Bill, Emmerdale, Broadchurch and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1.
