This week we have a rare vintage Perivale sewing silks cabinet coming up for sale. It probably begin life in the 1930s or 40s on the shop counter of a haberdashery store.
Perivale is a parish in Middlesex that had been largely agricultural until the 1930s. At this point it saw something of an expansion with companies such as Sanderson Wallpapers Ltd., Hoover and Perivale Sewing Silks moving in and constructing factories. By the 1950s, their heyday was over thanks to the invention of polyester and they merged with their German competitor, Gutermann, who still trade to this day.
It’s a great looking piece and full of character… useful too, with lots drawers and small compartments – perfect for a craft room or study.
